When you register a domain through Bandzoogle we manage the DNS for your domain name. We offer a domain management tool which you can use to add custom domain records. Using an externally-registered domain that is pointed to our servers also provides this option. You can use a custom domain record to set up a 3rd-party email service, add a subdomain, or verify a domain with an external service, for example.

Note: This is an advanced domain management tool for members who want to control their domain records. If your domain is registered with another domain registrar, we aren’t able to provide support for custom changes. DNS Manager is an advanced tool. If your domain is connected with an A record or forwarding instead of our nameservers, your registrar controls its records, so changes need to be made there.

  • What types of records can be customized
    • A records
    • AAAA records
    • ALIAS records
    • CNAME records
    • TXT records
    • SPF records
    • DKIM records
    • SRV records
    • MX records

Warning: Changing the A, AAAA, ALIAS or CNAME record for your main domain (yourdomain.com) or www.yourdomain.com points visitors away from your Bandzoogle website. Your site, and its SSL certificate, will stop working on that domain. Only change these records if you're moving your site to another host. Records for subdomains (like shop.yourdomain.com) are safe to add.

How to update domain records

If you’d like to add advanced records to your domain name, follow these steps:

  1. From the Control Panel, click the arrow next to your username in the top right corner
  2. Select ‘Account Details’ from the drop-down menu
  3. In the ‘Domain Manager’ area, click on the domain name you’d like to customize
  4. In the ‘DNS Manager’ area, click ‘Add Custom DNS Record’
  5. Select the ‘Type’ of record from the dropdown options
  6. Enter the details provided by your service in the following fields:

    • Name: The domain or subdomain the record applies to (for example, shop for shop.yourdomain.com, or leave blank for your main domain). Some providers call this the Host.
    • Content: Where the record points, or the value it holds. Depending on the record type this is an IP address, another domain name, or a line of text. Some providers call this the Value, Target or Data.
  7. Click ‘Add’

What type of records can be customized

A records

An A (address) record can be used to point your domain name (e.g. yourdomain.com), subdomain (e.g. subdomain.yourdomain.com), and host names to a static IP address. The A record specifies the IP address to which the visitor would be sent for each domain or subdomain. This means that you can have different subdomains of your website resolving to different IP addresses, which could be useful if they are hosted on different servers.

AAAA records

An AAAA record works like an A record, but points your domain or subdomain to an IPv6 address (for example, 2001:db8::1) instead of an IPv4 address. Some hosts give you both an A record and an AAAA record; add both if your provider asks for them.

Note: If you add an AAAA record for your main domain or www, some visitors may be sent to that address instead of your Bandzoogle website.

ALIAS records

An ALIAS record points your main domain (yourdomain.com) to another host name, such as yourstore.examplehost.com. It works like a CNAME record, but can be used on your main domain, where a CNAME isn't allowed. Use an ALIAS record when a service gives you a host name, not an IP address, for your main domain.

Warning: An ALIAS record on your main domain will point it away from your Bandzoogle website.

CNAME records

A CNAME record maps a name to another name. It should only be used when there are no other records on that name. Use a CNAME record if you want to alias a name to another name, and you don’t need things like MX records for emails for the same name.

CNAME records can't be used on your main domain (yourdomain.com). If a service asks you to point your main domain to a host name, use an ALIAS record instead.

TXT records

A TXT record provides text information to sources outside your domain. Unlike other records, a TXT record doesn't have any direct impact on the way your domain functions. Instead, it tells other services about your domain and how it is set up or what other services are in use on the domain. The text can be used for a variety of purposes.

SRV records

SRV records are advanced records that point to a specific server that is hosting another record. Most users will not need to add this record, but in some cases this type of record might be used in tandem with a TXT, SPF, or DNS record.

SPF records

An SPF record lists the services allowed to send email from your domain, such as your email provider or a mailing-list service. A domain can only have one SPF record; adding a second one causes email from all of them to fail authentication.

If you use Bandzoogle email, your domain already has an SPF record. When another service asks you to add an SPF record, please contact our support team with the "include:" value they gave you, and we'll merge it into your existing record.

DKIM records

A DKIM record lets receiving mail servers confirm that email sent from your domain is genuine and hasn't been changed on the way. It improves deliverability and is required by many providers, including Gmail and Yahoo, for bulk senders.

  • Bandzoogle email: If you have a Bandzoogle email inbox on this domain, we add the DKIM records for you. You'll see them in DNS Manager. Please don't edit or delete them, or your email may go to spam.
  • Other services: If another email or marketing service gives you DKIM records, add them as the record type they specify (usually TXT or CNAME). The name will look like selector._domainkey. You can have DKIM records for several services at once.

MX records

An MX (mail exchange) record is used to indicate which email servers accept incoming mail for your domain and where emails sent to your domain should be routed. If your MX records are not pointed to the correct location, you will not receive domain-based email.

If you are using Bandzoogle email, you won’t have to make any changes to the MX records. These will default to Bandzoogle settings once the email service is purchased here.

If you’d like a custom domain-based email address, you can purchase this by clicking the envelope icon in the Bandzoogle control panel. Learn more by viewing the ‘Website Email Address’ Help article.
